Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
The fifth-generation model of Sony's noise cancelling headphones appears a bit different from the previous model but they're just as good. They're lightweight, comfortable and come with a variety of features including Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention mode wear detection, and AI-powered DSEE Extreme audio upscaling.
The ANC is very powerful and reduces train noise to a low rumble. The 'pass-through' option allows you to hear external sounds in the event of a need.
1. Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony headphones are among the best when it comes noise cancellation. The fifth generation of WH1000XM5s are the same. They offer one of the most impressive audio experiences that we've had. The moment you put them on and enabling noise cancellation is like walking into a veritable cone of silence: engine sounds, the whir of HVAC systems, the rumbling metal, even conversations with your neighbors are all muted to an uncanny degree.
The XM5s are also impressive on the audio front with a wide soundstage that gives every element of a track space to breathe and shine. On Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy for example, the drums are pounding with a satisfying amount of power and weight while the soaring vocals blend throughout the mix.
Other features that make the XM5s stand out are their smart interactions with your smart device. They will detect the moment they're taken off your head and play music, they can note that you're driving on a noisy road and automatically dial down the noise cancelling levels, and they can connect with two devices at once to switch between them, depending on what you need more urgently.
The WH-1000XM5s are eco-friendly. The WH-1000XM5s are made from recycled plastics and acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Their headband is made from premium fabric. They come with a case that can be folded into itself, forming an incredibly compact pouch. Also included is an 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable so you can listen in passive mode. The earcups can be removed for easy cleaning. In addition, the XM5s run on rechargeable batteries that provide up to 20 hours of playtime when on a full charge. Additionally, they're equipped with an adaptive speed charging system that charges at twice the speed of conventional USB headphones.
2. Bose QuietComfort 35
The Bose QuietComfort35 II/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more flexible than the Audio-Technica's ATH-DSR9BT Wireless headphones due to their extremely comfortable fit, well-balanced sound profile, and ANC feature that blocks out a large amount of background noise. The Bose headphones have 20 hours of battery life, and are easier to charge, and can be used with a phone even if the battery is dead. This makes them an ideal choice for those looking for headphones that can be used as commuter or as travel headphones.
These premium Bose headphones come with a button that activates Google Assistant, which will play music as well as answer trivia questions and read your smartphone notifications. They have outstanding noise cancellation abilities, and while they're becoming a bit long in the tooth by 2020 standards (and have successors to their sibling line, the QC35) However, you can still get great deals on the headphones.
The QC35s, along with other Bose ANC headsets, do a good job at blocking out ambient noise. Their noise reduction technology has been improved over time. However they're not the most effective ANC headphones out there in comparison to more recent competitors and audiophiles should consider looking elsewhere for a better sound experience.
As with the Sonys, the QC35s can connect to two devices at once and "audio share" one of them with a person who is a friend. This is great if you're looking to listen music in one ear while conversing with another. They're also a popular option for frequent travellers, and they've got the classic Bose appearance that a lot of people enjoy. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker covers for decals are readily available at a reasonable price for those who want to personalize your QC35s.
3. Sony WH-1000XM4
Sony's WH-1000XM4s don't offer much in terms of aesthetic or comfort changes from the M3s, however its noise cancelling is an entirely new beast. The company has swapped out the old system-on-chip (SoC) for a new one, which it claims allows it to more accurately detect and respond to ambient audio in real-time, and reduce mid- and high-frequency sounds through its Dual Noise Sensor technology.
Two feedforward microphones in each earcup capture ambient sounds, which are then processed by the QN1 noise-cancelling process to reduce it as fast as possible without altering the quality of your music. The result is a level of noise reduction that is comparable to the top headphones in this price range.
There's even a sensitivity knob which lets you alter the noise cancellation to your requirements. You may, for instance prefer to listen to ambient sounds in public while at home, or you might prefer a more secluded off listening experience. This feature uses geo-location to determine the right setting based on where you are.
The WH-1000XM4s are able to be used for hands-free calls and have a whopping 30 hours of battery life along with fast charging capabilities. The WH-1000XM4s also have a robust Bluetooth connection that supports multipoint and NFC support. In my testing, I found that a quick restoration of Paul McCartney's Flaming pie was dynamic and clear as well as rough mixes and home recordings also sounded crisp.
Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to maximize the performance of these headphones. You can alter the EQ and enjoy convenience features like Bluetooth multipoint. It also unlocks cool new stuff, like Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive sound mastering process.
4. Sony WH-CH720N
If you're looking for headphones that provide excellent active noise cancellation at an affordable price the Sony WHCH720N are a great choice. They're a step up from their predecessor, the 710N Wireless, offering higher ANC performance and a better sound quality. They also come with smaller dimensions and up to 35 hours of battery life.
These headphones are not suitable for those who want flagship features like LDAC Bluetooth and Smart Listening which incorporates voice assistants. They also do not come with a carrying case or auto-pause feature, and the earcups can't fold and can make them difficult to carry around.
The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent however, it's not as great as the 1000XM5. The headband and earcups made of plastic. They're lightweight and comfortable for long periods of time however, they aren't built to withstand heavy use or a few falls on hard surfaces. The design is a bit heavy, and the earcups rattle when you move. The controls are easy to use, though they feature tactile buttons that provide an excellent click-based feedback. A single touch of the power button switches ANC on and off, whereas pressing and holding the button prompts you to activate Sony's Adaptive Audio Control functionality. This feature allows you to select a preset audio profile depending on the way you're using the headphones (e.g., "Staying at Work" or "Running") or the current location (with your phone's permission to make this determination).
The WH-CH720N wireless noise cancellation headphones are among the most affordable models on the market. You get great ANC for the price, lightweight comfort and up to 35 hours of battery life. If you're a frequent commuter these headphones are worth considering.

5. Earfun Air Pro
Earfun's earbuds and headsets are well-known for their value and the Air Pro is no exception. They are great for calls and music, and their ANC technology blocks out a large amount of noise, without making your ears feel uncomfortable. They also have numerous features you can find on competing headphones that cost twice or more.
The earbuds are emphasized in the bass area, which can create a rumble on many tracks. The lead vocals and instruments remain clear and bright. This makes them suitable for a variety of music. However, they might sound a bit stuttery to some. The frequency response is extremely consistent, which means they sound exactly the same no matter what you listen to.
We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On and the earbuds embraced the song's bassy intro with enthusiasm and enthusiasm. Stormzy's Vossi Bop was a similarly agile listen with the treble shining through the layered vocals as well as the percussion.
On the phone, voice quality is excellent even in noisy environments. The earbuds are equipped with the latest Qualcomm chip to maintain the clarity of calls, with background noises and clicks kept to a minimum, even when speaking near the London Underground at rush hour.
The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also very good, with little to any issues during our testing. They connect and pair quickly with a minimal amount of latency for iOS and Android devices. They are also IPX5 water resistant, so they're fine for rain and exercise - though you shouldn't immerse them in water. They also come with a portable case that holds two and a half charges that are great to take on trips.
